Natural Resources

Mineral resources: Three categories (metals, non metals, and energy mineral resources) of minerals including 80 different varieties have been discovered. 44 kinds of minerals have proven reserves, among which gold, antimony, tin, and fluorite reserves rank first in Jiangxi province, copper ranks second, tungsten ranks third, and the reserves of limestone, quartz sand, marble, granite and clay are considerable, with a total potential value of over 100 billion Yuan. Jiujiang has been included in the nation's "golden cities" since 1990, with its main production base including gold deposits in the Yangji Mountain of Ruichang County and the Tulong Mountain of Xiushui County. 

Botanic resources: The forest is mainly distributed in the Jiuling Mountain and Mufu Mountain, covering more than 857,000 hectares.The forest coverage rate reaches 46.3%, with reserves of standing forest stock as high as 258.3 million square meters, along with 61.96 million strains of bamboo. 37 species of rare trees are under state protection, such as taxus chinensis var.mairei, camphor, Eucommia ulmoides, Ginkgo, Cryptomeria fortunei, etc. There are three national forest parks and four provincial forest parks in Jiujiang. 

Animal resources: There are 115 species of migratory birds, 11 species of amphibians, and 20 kinds of mammals. 126 species of migratory birds spend winter in the Poyang Lake Nature Reserve, including 840 white cranes and over 3000 swans. The number of migratory birds ranks the first in the world, so this reserve was praised by foreign experts as China's second great wall. In Taohong Ridge of Pengze County, there are more than 150 Sika Deer. There are 109 kinds of fish, including precious species like the Chinese sturgeon, hilsa herring, whitebait, goby, Pengze crucian carp, etc. The Chinese mitten crab is also a local specialty. 

Water resources: There is 13,650 million cubic meters of surface water, 14,180 million cubic meters of total water resources, and 329 thousand kilowatts of hydropower resources. The Yangtze River has an annual flow of 890 billion cubic meters with a length of 151 kilometers in Jiujiang. And the basin area flowing straight into the Yangtze River is of 3904 square kilometers. There are more than 10 lakes with an area of over 10 thousand Chinese mu and 31 lakes with an area of over one thousand Chinese mu. The province's largest reservoirZhelin reservoir has a storage capacity of more than 7.92 billion cubic meters. 53% water area of the Poyang Lake is in the territory of Jiujiang, covering an area of nearly 3 million Chinese mu.
