Cultural Destination

Jiujiang, where famous mountains and great rivers and lakes gather and outstanding people are born, can be described as "a place with poetry and scenery everywhere". And the combination of the humanities and the scenery highlights the profound cultural heritage of Jiujiang history.

The Langjing Well

As Jiujiang’s earliest historical relic, Langjing Well is located in the western district of the city. There was a square pavilion guarding the ancient well. Around the wall of the well, there were deep rope marks and clusters of moss with clear water in the well, as calm as a mirror. According to the legend, Guan Ying, a famous General of the Western Han Dynasty stationed troops in Jiujiang and led the soldiers to dig this well. So it’s also called Guan Ying Well.  The difference between the Guan Ying Well and other wells in the city is, "every time the tides and waves surge in the Yangtze River, people could hear the sounds of tides from the Langjing Well.”

Tao Yuanming Memorial Museum

The Memorial Museum is located in Shahe town, Jiujiang County. Tao Yuanming, a citizen of Jiujiang, was the greatest poet in China and the founder of pastoral poetry. He lived in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, while witnessing the dark officialdom, warlords and popular destitution, he couldn’t make curtsies for the salary of five bushels of rice, so he resigned and wrote the essay Returning Home. He began to make a living by farming and wrote down a lot of pastoral poetry after returning to his hometown. His pastoral poems are sincere, pure, natural, clear, and full of love for life. He wrote “the Peach Blossom Spring” and put forward the concept of his ideal society---- "the Peach Garden", which has become the spiritual home for the Chinese literati and the people.

The Yanshui Pavilion (or the Mist and Water Pavilion)

The Yanshui Pavilion was built in the center of the Gantang Lake in downtown Jiujiang. In the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi, one of the great poets, went boating here to enjoy the landscape of lakes and mountains, and wrote poems about it.  According to the legend, in the Northern Song Dynasty, philosopher Zhou Dunyi built "the Jinyue Pavilion (Jinyue means the moon in the water )" on the island, echoing with the artistic prospect of Bai Juyi’s verses “when we are apart, the cold moonlight and water make us feel more sad ”. Later generations named the pavilion “Yanshui (means mist and water)” according to another famous verse “the mountain and lake are covered by the mist”. Now, the Yanshui Pavilion refers to a group of architecture, including "Zhou Yu Exhibition Hall", which introduces stories of Zhou Yu, a famous general during the Three Kingdoms period.  In the middle stands a 3-meter-high statue of Zhou Yu, who holds a book and a sword in his hands, recreating this bright and brave general.

The Donglin Temple

Located at the northern foot of Mount Lushan, the Donglin Temple is one of the original culture of Jiujiang. It is the birthplace of Chinese Pure Land Buddhism. This temple was established by a famous monk, Hui Yuan in 386 AD in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Now, it is one of the most ancient temples of Mount Lushan. It became one of the Eight Chinese Buddhist Dojos in the Han and Tang Dynasties. The Tang Dynasty monk Jian Zhen had been there and brought the doctrine of Donglin into Japan, even to this day, Dongling Buddhists in Japan still regard Hui Yuan as its founder. Therefore, the Donglin Temple had a positive effect on the history of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.

The Bailudong Academy (White Dear Cave Academy)

One of the four biggest academies in China.
